Linux: Instructions for reset password with single mode on Linux

Overview

The article show how to reset password on Ubuntu Linux

The configuration is applicable to versions 14.04, 16.04, 18.04, 20.04

How to configure

  • Restart Ubuntu linux
  • Go to Grub boot menu (if you don’t see grub boot menu, reboot and press Shift a few times)
  • Choose *Ubuntu and click e to edit
  • Find line linux /boot/vmlinuz-…
  • Change the ro… to rw init=/bin/bash
  • After changing the syntax -> Press Ctrl+X or F10 to enter Single mode and enter the following commands

# passwd root

# sync

# reboot -f

  • After rebooting -> Log in with new password and check access
